Floral Painting Workshop
Two Weekend Sessions (4 Days)
Daily 9:30 am – 12:30 pm and 1:30 – 4:30 pm
Capturing the delicate essence of floral arrangements is the main objective of this course. Flowers are very much alive and emanate a special beauty that can be captured in painting. Students will learn about the structure of flowers, to render their inherent beauty and their capacity for expression. Compositional aspects in regards to floral arrangements will be discussed. Students will learn about choices of supplementary objects to support the arrangement and various color selections to enhance the harmony of the pictorial space. Several techniques will be taught to capture and represent the blossoms in a convincing life-like manner. This course includes a short lecture about the history of floral painting. Students may use any medium (oil, pastel, gouache, watercolor, colored pencil, egg tempera, and graphite).
Individual instructions will be emphasized.
How to Develop Paintings from Photographs

Since the invention of the camera, many artists have made use of photographs as a reference for their creations. The artist Thomas Eakins an American realist comes to mind, he used his own photographs as a source for inspiration and composition in many of his fine paintings. In this class students will learn to use their own snapshots to create their own masterpiece. Students will be guided to develop a balanced composition and interpret the color and value aspects of photographs to create their artwork. Learning to recognize the shortcomings of snapshots and to enhance the positive characteristic to create vibrant expressions will be a vital component of this course. Landscapes, portraits or any other subject matter can be used as an image for the class.
