Creativity and Time

lectures

Time has a distinct rhythm, like music or artwork, it is expressing through a

continuous flow of various qualities of energy also known as

"Zeitgeist".

Understanding these qualities gives us insight into the development

of art with its many forms of expression.

  • What meaning holds the recently discovered 35.000 old stone age Venus carved from mammoth-ivory for us today?
  • How is it possible that so many art forms developed?
  • Why did the pictorial space disintegrate during the last century?
  • Where is creativity headed today?

This FLOW is not only affecting the arts, it can be observed in all aspects of our lives.

As a society we define these structures as we make use of them in our daily lives.

Not only do they affect each individual, they also influence society's history (art history)

as they penetrate all facets of our lives

and shape

everything and influence everybody.

Marlies Ihmels (B.A., M.F.A.)

I have experience as a fashion-designer and artist (encl. drawing, painting, sculpting) and have worked with structures throughout my professional career.

These influences of structural qualities are clearly visible by studying the history of art and design.

While visiting several museums in Munich (Germany), I recorded these changes as can be seen by looking at the photographs to your left (top to bottom).

Our cultural preference has moved from earthy, three-dimensional realism to abstract concepts of flat pictorial images over the last centuries.

 Why, you may ask?
